When Data Access Becomes a Competitive Advantage, Who Captures the Value?
Data access is becoming part of competitive strategy as publishers, platforms, AI services, and information businesses reconsider who controls access, who pays for it, and who ultimately captures the economic value created from information. ORV-BBI-005 examines how access controls, licensing agreements, distribution channels, and customer relationships can shift bargaining power without guaranteeing profitable monetization.
Using Cloudflare, Reddit, and the European Union’s Digital Markets Act as distinct cases, the analysis separates technical access, contractual licensing, regulatory access rights, and downstream commercial use. It shows that control over information can strengthen a business position, but sustainable value capture depends on differentiated information, customer demand, legal rights, distribution, and the ability to convert access into viable commercial transactions.
