Data Provenance as a Business Asset: Turning Traceability into Economic Value

Data provenance becomes commercially valuable when reliable information can support transactions, compliance, risk management, supplier relationships, and market access. ORV-DEG-001 examines the difference between simply collecting data and maintaining records that are sufficiently traceable, relevant, and reliable to support real business decisions.

Using Digital Product Passports, battery passports, food traceability requirements, and chain-of-custody frameworks as examples, the analysis separates traceability from verification and digital integrity from proof of underlying physical events. It shows that provenance can become an economic asset when it reduces uncertainty or supports commercially important obligations, while more data alone does not guarantee stronger evidence or greater value.
