The Hidden Cost of Unverified Data in Enterprise Decision-Making

Enterprise data supports critical decisions across financial planning, procurement, operations, and capital allocation. Yet the availability of information does not guarantee its reliability, accuracy, or suitability for business use.

This research examines the commercial consequences of relying on incomplete, outdated, inconsistent, or insufficiently verified information. It explores how data-quality limitations can contribute to operational inefficiencies, repeated work, delayed decisions, misleading financial forecasts, and additional costs when errors spread across interconnected business systems.

Drawing on research and institutional guidance from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and IBM, the study distinguishes data reliability from information security and examines the economic importance of verification, provenance, and responsible data governance.

The findings demonstrate why data quality is not merely a technical concern but a business consideration affecting the dependability of enterprise decisions. While the financial consequences vary across organizations and circumstances, the research identifies a fundamental distinction between possessing information and having information sufficiently reliable for consequential use.
