The Distributional Effects of Inflation Relief Policies Across Income Groups
Inflation relief policies can protect household purchasing power, but their benefits are not necessarily distributed equally across income groups. This research examines how cash transfers, energy subsidies, tax reductions, and price controls affect households with different spending patterns and financial resources. Drawing on evidence from the IMF, OECD, European Commission, and national statistical sources, it explores the relationship between policy design, household protection, and public expenditure.
The study compares broad-based support with targeted assistance, examining the trade-offs between fiscal cost, administrative capacity, and the ability to reach vulnerable households. It distinguishes observed outcomes from modeled estimates and explains why spending more on inflation relief does not automatically mean delivering greater protection to those most in need. The research provides an evidence-based foundation for understanding the distributional and fiscal consequences of cost-of-living interventions.
