Grid Connection Delays and the Economic Cost of Deferred Industrial Investment
Reliable electricity access is essential for industrial development, yet grid connection delays can prevent manufacturing facilities, data centres, and other energy-intensive projects from operating on schedule. This research examines how electricity network constraints affect industrial investment timing, drawing on evidence from the International Energy Agency, European Commission, Ofgem, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The study explores the economic consequences of deferred operations, including financing pressures, delayed productive use of capital, and industrial location decisions. It distinguishes physical network limitations from administrative connection queues and speculative applications, explaining why queued electricity capacity cannot be directly interpreted as confirmed investment losses.
