The Reproducibility of Multicountry Applied Research Using Public Datasets
Public international datasets have expanded opportunities for economic and social research, but open access does not guarantee that published findings can be reproduced or reliably compared across countries. This research examines the distinction between data availability, computational reproducibility, statistical robustness, and international comparability, drawing on empirical evidence from a 2026 Nature study and institutional guidance from the World Bank, United Nations, and American Economic Association.
The study explores how historical data revisions, differing national statistical definitions, missing observations, and analytical assumptions can affect research outcomes. It explains why successfully reproducing a published calculation does not necessarily establish the validity or stability of its conclusions, providing an evidence-based framework for interpreting multicountry research using public datasets.
