Can AI Change the Economics of Financial Cybercrime?
Artificial intelligence is changing the capabilities available to financial cybercriminals, particularly in the production of deceptive communications, multilingual fraud, synthetic media, and automated content generation.
This research examines how AI may influence the economics of financial cybercrime by reducing effort in selected activities, expanding operational scale, and changing the effectiveness of digital deception.
Drawing on evidence from the FBI, UNODC, Europol, the United Kingdom National Cyber Security Centre, INTERPOL, and experimental phishing research, the study distinguishes technological capability from measurable financial outcomes.
The research examines why higher phishing engagement rates, AI-associated fraud complaints, and reported victim losses cannot automatically be interpreted as equivalent increases in criminal profitability.
Its central finding is that AI can change the economics of financial cybercrime, while its aggregate effect on realized criminal profits remains incompletely measured.
